The Art of Jewelry Manufacturing

Creating jewelry is an art form that represents a perfect balance between creative ability and accuracy; the transformation from raw materials to masterpieces is breathtaking. Step 1 – CAD/CAM - Designing the Future

Computer-aided design- CAD, and Computer-Aided Manufacturing- CAM transforming the experience of making jewelry by giving designers the ability to create clean, digital images of designs that came from their imaginations. CAD allows designers to produce beautifully detailed 3D renderings of the pieces they imagine, ensuring accuracy, symmetry, and aesthetics.

Once the CAD design is complete, it is used to create a physical or solid object using cutting-edge 3D printing or CNC milling technology to create a wax or resin prototype. Now we can use technology to do that quicker, both customization, revisions, and details are brought into a 3D computerized printout, making your jewelry safely come alive.

Step 2 – Model Making – Bringing Designs to Life

Once the CAD design has been finished, the designer creates a prototype of the digital design with the assistance of skilled artisans. These artisans create a model, generally out of either wax or resin. This model represents much of the final piece of jewelry and can be modified if needed before production. The model-making step can be done by either a hand-carving process out of wax or a machine process of digital design, but it is an important step to ensure precision.

Step 3 – Rubber Mould – Preserving Perfection

Once the ideal piece has been formed, tuned, and confirmed, the model is wrapped in high-quality rubber and vulcanized for durability in production. Once cooled, the rubber is cut open, returning the model and leaving a cavity in the rubber piece. This cavity becomes a mold for clearing wax replicas of the model efficiently and at scale while maintaining the constant production quality of a given piece of jewelry.

Step 4 – Waxing/Wax Tree – Establishing the Framework

Hot wax is dispensed into the rubber mold, producing exact copies of the original item. The wax copies are then assembled onto a wax tree, which not only allows for multiple works to be cast at the same time but it improves the material efficiency of the process while keeping each piece uniform, preparing the jewelry for the metal casting process.

Step 5 – Casting or Handcrafting – Forming Precious Metals

Regardless of whether the jewelry is made by the lost wax method of casting or is handcrafted by jewelers, the process begins after the wax model has been completed (and in the case of casting, the wax sprue tree has been made). In the case of casting, the wax tree is placed into a mold and filled with plaster so that the wax can be melted out, after which it is replaced with molten metal to form solid metal replicas of the original. Handcrafted pieces are created when skilled and trained artisans shape, solder, and finish to create a more personalized, unique piece of handcrafted jewelry.

Step 6 – Grinding – Improving the Shape

When the jewelry comes out of the casting or crafting stage, it has excess metal, rough edges, and/or sprue that need to be removed or built up. By using grinding and/or filing techniques, artisans will smooth the surface and improve the shape while maintaining finer details. This is an important stage before proceeding to subsequent steps to fully complete the jewelry in its finished state.

Step 7 – Assembly/Filing – Finalizing the Design

If an item has multiple components, a skilled artisan assembles and solders the parts together. This provides a seamless collection of parts, which are then filed down to achieve a perfect result. Skilled workmanship at this stage greatly enhances the overall structural and visual integrity of the jewelry. We ensure that the pieces, after going through this process, melt straight into your heart. No loopholes, pure design.

Step 8 – Pre-Polishing – Creating Smooth Table

Before being set with gemstones, jewelry is pre-polished to produce a smooth, reflective surface. Using special tools, an artisan will buff away minor scratches and surface imperfections to prep the metal for a perfect gemstone bench. The surface will accommodate the finishing polish and allow the polish to fully develop so the piece of jewelry shines the much as it can.

Step 9 – Gemstone Setting – Adding Sparkle

Master stone setters will carefully place and lock the stone into the jewelry through various methods such as prong, bezel, or pavé. If the method is prong or bezel or similar styles, the process requires focus and stability because the need of the final product is to capture and keep the stone(s) in place while allowing the stone(s) to shine as brightly as naturally possible. The correct method allows durability while keeping the possible beauty.

Step 10 – Polishing – Achieving the Perfect Shine

Jewelry is polished with fine abrasives and polishing compounds, creating a smooth surface for buffing. The polishing phase allows the metal to achieve the greatest surface shine to be used and preserved by the owner in mirror-like shine, enhancing the beauty of the finished piece of jewelry.
